Llama Trekking in the Appalachians

Article Date: Fri Nov 4 2005

Llama Trekking -what an interesting idea! The Llamas' centuries old ability as a beast of burden has been rediscovered by hikers, backpackers, and forest work crews. Their surefootedness and padded feet, along with their ability to graze and browse, has minimal impact on the back country. A Llamas' common sense and gentle manner makes them an excellent pack animal and trail companion. It’s the males that are most commonly packers, and can carry 50 to 120 pounds.
Since Llamas make such wonderful hiking companions, it is becoming a less and less rare idea for ones to take a llama trek. Not only are they going to carry the load you would normally have to contend with, most llamas enjoy the hike as much as their handler. Llamas with their keen eyes, tend to notice wildlife and draw attention to things you would normally not even see along the trail. Their intelligence, agility and calm disposition make them outstanding pack animals. Put that together with their surefootedness, ease of handling and low impact on the environment, and you can soon see why so many have come to see trekking as a great way to enjoy the outdoors!
English Mountain Llama Treks is one such outfitter trekking the beautiful area of Max Patch in the Appalachian mountains of thePisgah National Forest. Just above Hot Springs, NC are these incredible views of western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee taken in at 360 degrees, and just over 4000 feet. This particular guide service provides hearty meals, snacks and beverages, as well as all your camping gear for your back country adventure. They set up a comfortable camp supplying tents, sleeping mattress and bags, roll up tables and stools for the dining area and Para flies to keep the rain off. Forget the freeze dried normal backpacker meal too, they can have coolers for ice water, fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and frozen deserts! It is truly something to experience for yourself ~and kids LOVE it too!
